Durham Council Solicits Committee On Roadside Panhandling

Posted — Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — The Durham City Council will not change rules for who can and cannot solicit near intersections and freeway exits just yet.

Tuesday evening, council members decided to create a committee to examine safety methods for roadside panhandlers and most solicitors.

City leaders said street beggars pose a danger to themselves and drivers and were exploring an ordinance to ban the practice.

Newspaper vendors and fundraising firefighters said the ban should not apply to them.

Police said selling or collecting money in the roads is dangerous for anyone.
