Chapel Hill Gets Red-Light Cameras At Two Intersections

Posted — Updated

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Starting on Wednesday, red-light cameras will start snapping pictures at two Chapel Hill intersections.

The cameras are located at the intersections of U.S. Highway 15-501 at Sage Road and Airport Road at Estes Drive.

Officials said there will be a 1-week grace period and violators will just get a warning. However after that, violators will face a $50 fine.

More red-light cameras are set to go up in Raleigh this week. There are currently cameras at two Raleigh intersections -- Dawson and South and Six Forks at Rowan.

By Sept. 5, the state Department of Transportation will have cameras at Dawson and Morgan, Wilmington at Morgan, Rock Quarry at Crosslink, Hillsborough at Dixie Trail and Capital Boulevard at Highwoods.

Engineers say they will move cameras if they are not effective in reducing crashes.
