David Campbell Jones, 46, was a science teacher and coach at Phillips Middle School for 23 years and a Boy Scout leader. He was arrested two weeks ago and has since resigned.
Jones was charged with one count of solicitation of a child by computer to commit an unlawful sex act. After the father of a 15-year-old boy alleged that a man was soliciting his son online, a detective posed as the teen and arranged to meet with the man at the boy's home, authorities said.
Jones was arrested as he walked up to the boy's house. He was found with lubricant, condoms and a digital camera, according to court documents.
Jones also has been charged in Wake County with taking indecent liberties with a child last April. Bail for that case was set at $100,000.
Jones' attorney is expected to ask a Wake County judge to lower that bail as well.
If Jones is able to post bond, conditions of his release also include having no contact with children younger than 18, except for family members, no visits to Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools' property, no use of the Internet and continued therapy.
