Officers kicked off the Good Neighbor Initiative on Saturday. Joined by volunteers, police ventured off campus to encourage students to meet their Chapel Hill neighbors so everyone can get along a little better during the school year.
"We were looking for ways three years ago to get out and reach this portion of the population, particularly this time of year, and we give them information that they may not be aware of. So, we came up with the Good Neighbor Initiative," said Lt. Kevin Gunter with the Chapel Hill Police Department.
The program has grown over the past three years. Officers and volunteers will hand out 400 packets of information to off-campus students.
Students at both UNC and North Carolina State University are moving into on-campus housing this weekend. Peace and Meredith Colleges are also moving in on Saturday. Students at Shaw, St. Augustine's, and North Carolina Central University are already moved in and unpacking. Duke students head to campus starting Tuesday
