Authorities said the fire was contained to one fourth-floor apartment, but the entire building was evacuated.

The 178-unit complex was named after a former chairman of the Durham Housing Authority board of commissioners.

The three people were taken to a local hospital as a precaution, authorities said, but there was no word on their conditions late Tuesday afternoon.

The fire remains under investigation.
