Two-week-old Maria Ramirez and her aunt, 16-year-old Sylvia Ramirez, are listed in critical condition at Johnston County Memorial Hospital. Officials said they are on life support and will be taken to UNC Hospitals.
An initial investigation of the accident shows that 17-year-old Crystal Dawn Ramirez, of Kenly, was driving a 2002 Kia when she apparently lost control and ran off the road to the right and into a creek. The car hit the creek bank and overturned, coming to rest on its roof.
Ramirez was able to free herself from the car and get help. The Highway Patrol was dispatched to the scene at 2:33 p.m.
The passenger, Sylvia Ann Ramirez, 16, who is the sister of Crystal, and the driver's 13-day-old daughter, Maria Ramirez, were taken to Johnston Memorial Hospital.
Authorities said the infant was strapped into her baby seat in the car.
Crystal was treated and released. Sylvia and Maria were later airlifted to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
Authorities said they do not think weather or speed were factors in the accident.
