Police say three masked men entered the LaQuinta Inn on West Park Drive just after midnight. Police say they stole a clerk's wallet and some money out of the register. Police say as the suspects were leaving, one of them shot 79-year-old Herman Jefferies, who was a security guard at the motel.
Jefferies was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment. There is no word on his condition.
One suspect was described as a black male, 5-feet-9 inches to 5-feet-10 inches tall and 175 to 180 pounds. He was wearing a black stocking cap, a black shirt, black pants and black shoes. The second suspect was described as a black male, 5-feet-9 inches to 5-feet-10 inches tall and 160 to 170 pounds. He was wearing a ski mask and black clothing. The third suspect was described as 5-feet-10 inches to 6-feet-tall and 230 pounds. He was wearing a ski mask, a gray or black jacket and black pants.
