Apex celebrates new elementary school
Laurel Park Elementary School, which began classes on July 7, was re-configured from the former Bespak Industrial Plant.

APEX, N.C. — Students, parents and neighbors celebrated the opening of Laurel Park Elementary School in Apex Wednesday.
Staff guided visitors through the new building, and students entertained with a song and dance.
The school, which began classes on July 7, was re-configured from the former Bespak Industrial Plant. Architects and school planners added a second floor, outdoor play areas, parking and auto and bus loops to the existing space.
“The opening of Laurel Park Elementary School is a true representation of what solid planning and some creative thinking will do,” said WCPSS Superintendent Del Burns. “With the help of our many partners in the community, we were able to turn an old warehouse into a great looking school for hundreds of students in Wake County.”
About 600 students on multiple tracks will attend the year-round school. School colors are red, black and white. The school mascot is a penguin.
