HENDERSON, N.C. — Three motorcyclists were injured while trying to avoid a cat on U.S. Highway 1 in Vance County Saturday, according to the state Highway Patrol.

The motorcyclists went into the median, near the bypass at Edwards Road, while trying to avoid the cat around 1:15 p.m.

Troopers said that William Zachary Savage, 54, of Virginia, was flown to Duke Medical Center for treatment. He was listed in critical condition Sunday morning after undergoing surgery.

The other two motorcyclists had minor injuries and were treated at a local hospital.

The three were traveling with a group from Virginia to Raleigh.

No charges will be filed, trooper said.
