List: Remember lives lost, honor first responders in the Triangle on 9/11

There are many ways to remember the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001 on Wednesday across the Triangle.

RALEIGH, N.C. — There are many ways to remember the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001 and to honor first responders on Wednesday across the Triangle.

Run and walk

9/11 Memorial Run (Stafford Commons at NC State University, 2610 Cates Avenue, Raleigh) - This 5K walk or run is meant to remember those lost on 9/11. The cost of registration is $15 and covers admission, an event T-shirt and professional timing. A memorial service will be held at 8:30 a.m. At 9:11 a.m., sirens from the fire engines of local first responders will signal the start of the run.
9/11 Heroes Run (WakeMed Soccer Park, 201 Soccer Park Dr., Cary) - The 8 a.m. event welcomes runners and walkers of all levels and of all ages.
Kenan Memorial Stair Run (Kenan Memorial Stadium, 104 Stadium Dr., Chapel Hill ) - At 5:40 a.m., UNC's Army ROTC will host students, campus leaders, first responders and community members for the annual stair run. Runners will climb 2,076 steps at Kenan to represent the steps in the World Trade Center Towers.

Volunteer

9/11 Day of Service - Hundreds of people will volunteer their time on Wednesday to recognize 9/11. Volunteers must register for the service project of their choice beforehand. Service projects include refurbishing schools, packaging food for those in need and more. Visit www.activategood.org to register to volunteer.

9/11 Day of Service Evening Commemoration (Marbles, 201 E. Hargett St., Raleigh) - Starting at 6 p.m., locals will hear words from leaders, enjoy live music and participate in service projects at stations throughout the museum to wrap up the eighth annual day of service. Attendees are asked to bring a nonperishable food item to donate to 'fill-the-truck' for the Urban Ministries of Wake County.

9/11 Anniversary Ceremony (Holly Springs Fire Station 1, 700 Flint Point Lane) - The Holly Springs Fire Department will honor first responders by gathering at 9:30 a.m. at the fire station's 9/11 memorial, which includes a piece of steel from the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
First Responders Day and 9/11 Remembrance (Chapel Hill Fire Station 1, 403 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.) - Emergency responders from the Town of Chapel Hill will gather on the front lawn to remember the lives lost in New York, Arlington and Stonycreek Township on 9/11.
