LILLINGTON, N.C. — Linda Stephens, a Lillington town commissioner who was in her sixth year in office, passed away Thursday at her home, officials said.

“The town has lost a great leader, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family,” Mayor Glenn McFadden said in a statement.

Stephens was a retired guidance counselor who spent 33 years in Harnett County public schools. As commissioner, she advocated for downtown revitalization and more recreational opportunities for residents.

“Mrs. Stephens was a widely respected public servant that cared deeply for Lillington,” Town Manager Bill Summers said. “The staff will dearly miss her kindness and leadership.”

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lillington Baptist Church, where a visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday. A burial will follow at Summerville Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
