NEW BERN, N.C. — A Princeville man has been sentenced to prison, nearly three years after being indicted on heroin-trafficking charges, the U.S. Department of Justice Eastern District of North Carolina announced in a new release Friday.

Mario Marelle Scott, 44, pleaded guilty in November 2019 on charges of conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute more than 1 kilogram of heroin and "a quantity of marijuana," the release states.

U.S. District Judge Louise W. Flanagan sentenced Scott to nearly five years -- 57 months -- in prison.

Scott was among eight people law enforcement brought charges against as a part of a Tar River Regional Drug Task Force investigation of a drug trafficking organization. The seven others have already been sentenced.

Law enforcement authorities said the group would pick up heroin in New Jersey and bring it back to Nash, Edgecombe and Halifax counties to sell.

From 2015 to 2017, authorities contended, Scott and another man since sentenced to 96 months in prison, sold about 100 grams of heroin each month. Scott was responsible for almost 10 kilograms of heroin.

The leader of the organization, Terrence Cornelius "Tee" Clyburn has already been sentenced to 147 months -- more than 12 years -- in prison, the news release states.
