CARY, N.C. — A gas leak reported in Cary Tuesday afternoon kept a major intersection closed for the Wednesday morning commute.

The gas leak was first reported around 2 p.m. at Cary Parkway and Kildaire Farm Road, near Trader Joe's. Town of Cary officials said a private contractor hit a gas line. Drivers were asked to avoid the area as the impacted roads were closed in all directions.

Crews worked throughout the night and contained the leak by 4 a.m.

Town of Cary officials said Cary Parkway from Kildare Farm Road to High Meadow Drive would be closed through at least 7 a.m. Wednesday while the road is paved. Officials hoped to have the area open to traffic earlier Wednesday morning.

The Boston Market, Jiffy Lube and a nearby gas station were evacuated Tuesday as a precaution.
