Fayetteville mom to 911: 'Somebody just stole my car with my kids in it'

A mother called 911 just after 1 p.m. to report that her car, with a newborn and a 2-year-old inside, had been stolen.

"Somebody just stole my car with my kids in it," she told the 911 dispatcher. "I just want my kids. I just want my kids to be safe."

Police said the woman left her car running outside a Pizza Hut at 3069 Boone Trail Extension while she went inside. When she returned, the car, with her children inside, was missing.

A second person placed a call to 911 about two minutes later, saying they saw the car "flying down the road" and nearly hitting another vehicle.

"This car is going to hurt somebody," the caller said.

Based on the woman's description, officers were able to find the car and chase it onto a dead-end road near Joan Poole's home.

"I looked and I saw all the red lights coming from behind him," she said. "He came like, airborne, over the driveway."

Poole said the driver turned past her home and finally stopped in her neighbor's backyard. Authorities said he only drive about a mile from where the car was stolen.

Don Stevenson Wallace, 41, of the 5100 block of Cypress Road, was charged with two counts first-degree kidnapping, breaking and entering of a motor vehicle, larceny of a motor vehicle, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, two counts of damage to property, felony fleeing to elude arrest, driving with a revoked license, reckless driving to endanger persons or property and speeding.

He was being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center under $221,500 secured bond Tuesday night. During a Wednesday court appearance, Wallace said that he was drunk during the incident and didn't know the children were in the car.

The children were returned safely to their mother inside Poole's home.

"I think shes's probably still in shock," Poole said. "It has been extremely hard, extremely emotional for everybody on this street."

Fayetteville police said no charges had been filed against the mother as of Tuesday night.
