Durham shooting victim dies; acquaintance charged with murder

Charges against a Durham man accused of shooting his acquaintance last month were upgraded to murder Tuesday after the victim died from his injuries.

DURHAM, N.C. — Charges against a Durham man accused of shooting his acquaintance last month were upgraded to murder Tuesday after the victim died from his injuries.

On Aug. 23, officers responding to a report of someone with a gunshot wound found 44-year-old Noel Rivera inside a vehicle in the driveway at 1906 Stadium Drive. He was taken to Duke University Hospital, where he died over the weekend.

Ashraf Mwafaq Mubaslat, 39, of Stadium Drive, was charged Aug. 23 with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. He posted $500,000 bond and was released from jail.

On Tuesday afternoon, Mubaslat turned himself over to authorities to face the murder charge.
