DURHAM, N.C. — The Durham Rescue Mission will again be taking care of Bull City families this Easter weekend with a free meal and games for kids.

Dozens of volunteers show up to prepare and serve the annual dinner, working for hours before guests arrive.

Families come from across the city for a plate of barbecue, Easter baskets for kids and donations of clothes and groceries.

Volunteers on Friday chopped up 700 pounds of pork for the meal, prepped baked beans and grilled hot dogs. They expect to give out more than 1,500 meals and 1,000 Easter baskets.

The meal begins at noon.

Rob Tart, the COO of the Durham Rescue Mission, said the event has been in the work for months.

"We work on this for months," Tart said. "We're hoping to have about 450 volunteers here, and the volunteers are what really makes this event special. Without them, we'd just be without life."
