DURHAM, N.C. — The director of the Durham County Board of Elections was recovering at Duke Hospital Monday after he was hit by a car.

A Durham police spokeswoman said Ashe, 63, was running across Buchanan Boulevard Friday at noon when he was struck by a car.

He suffered multiple broken bones and a head injury, Ashe's second-in-command, Michael Perry said.

Charges have not been filed against the driver, Francis Vernon Chestnut of Burlington, police said.

Ashe was in fair condition Monday.
