Drivers, students hurt in Franklin County school bus collision

None of the injuries was life-threatening.

The crash happened shortly after 3 p.m. at the intersection of Bert Winston and Hicks roads in Youngsville.

The buses were carrying students from Youngsville and Franklinton elementary schools, according to Franklin County School System spokesman Joe Baisley.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the bus from Franklinton Elementary was turning left from Bert Winston Road onto Hicks Road when it crossed the center line and hit the second bus, which was stopped at the stop sign on Hicks Road.

Sainabou Darboe, 6, was on the first bus.

"(It was) kind of scary," she said. "There was a bus coming out. We were getting ready to go in and crashed."

Her mother took her to the hospital just in case, but Sainabou was not injured.

"I decided to bring her to the hospital and make sure she was OK," Mamanding Darboe said. "I was so scared, and I don't know, shocked."

Sainabou said she is thinking about her injured classmates.

"I was just worried for people who got hurt," she said.

The driver of the first bus, Toshona Wilkins, 25, was charged with driving left of center.

The injured drivers and students were taken to Wake Med North and Franklin Regional Medical Center, Baisley said. School personnel were on the scene and an additional bus was on the way to transport unhurt students home.
