TARBORO, N.C. — Edgecombe County authorities issued a boil-water order Wednesday after coliform bacteria was detected in water samples.

These bacteria are not harmful, but are an indicator that other, more harmful bacteria may be present.

Customers of the Edgecombe Water & Sewer District should boil all water for at least one minute if they plan to use it for drinking, cooking, making ice, washing skin or brushing teeth. Boiling will kill any potentially dangerous bacteria present.

The boil order will be in place until further tests determine that the danger has passed.
