A fire in Cincinnati last night displaced five people and caused an estimated $40,000 worth of damage, a grim reminder of how quickly your life can change. The victims of this fire will be working with Cincinnati remodeling teams to rebuild their house, with the assistance of the Red Cross, but while they wait, they'll be without a home base and they'll have to sift through the remains of their lives to see whcih belongings can be salvaged, and which are lost forever. House fires can move incredibly quickly and deal out considerable amounts of damage, even with emergency personnel on the scene within minutes. Are you ready for the worst?

We hope it never gets to this, but does your home have recently-charged fire extinguishers and working smoke/CO2 detectors in every room? Does everyone know how to use them, and how to respond if a fire does break out? If your family needs to evacuate, does everyone know where to meet up, and does everyone have a contact phone number memorized in case it's not possible to grab phones or address books on the way out the door? How about your pets? Make sure you have an evacuation plan ready for them too, and be aware that animals can panic in a fire and may behave erratically, so you can't depend on pets like dogs to follow commands.
