MORRISVILLE, N.C. — Alaska Airlines announced Tuesday it will launch service at Raleigh-Durham International Airport with nonstop flights to Seattle.

The daily flights on a 163-seat Boeing 737 will begin Oct. 1.

“The Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority is excited to welcome Alaska Airlines to our community,” Airport Authority President and CEO Michael Landguth said in a statement. “Service to Seattle has been at the top of our list of most wanted destinations and rounds out the service now offered from RDU to the West Coast.”

Landguth said 146,000 passengers travel between RDU and Seattle each year, and much of that traffic is business travel. The authority began discussing the service with Alaska Airlines, which is based in Seattle, in 2007 as the number of passengers began to grow.

The airline also announced it will begin nonstop flights in the fall from Seattle to Charleston, S.C., and Nashville, Tenn.

Tickets for the new destinations are now on sale.
