HENDERSON, N.C. — Community leaders said the Town of Henderson is in a "crisis situation."

Four people have died in shootings in less than a week in the city of only 15,000 people.

The widower of a man shot to death on Wednesday is speaking out for the first time.

He said the world is not the same without his husband’s smile and love for all people. Dakota Kittrell is struggling to eat, sleep and even talk. He said an irreplaceable piece of him is missing.

“It’s killing me. It’s killing me,” Kittrell said. “I miss everything about him. He was everything to me.”

His husband, Dyrel Kittrell, was killed Wednesday at a home on Harrell Street.

“He was everything,” he said. “My entire world. My reason for being here, and it’s gone. It’s gone.”

Dyrel Kittrell is one of two people killed there that morning.

“The only thing that will make me feel just a little bit better is (if) these people understand that they took somebody very special from the world to me, to a lot of people," Dakota Kittrell said. "And I can forgive anything, but I will never forget, and I just want them to come forth and tell what happened. Why."

Rev. Curtis Gatewood is working with community leaders to support the victims' families and stop future violence.

“We have an emergency situation, and time is of the essence,” Gatewood said.

Dakota Kittrell said now he only has photos to remember the man he will love forever, whose ring will remain on his finger.

“It’s hard looking at (photos). It’s like he’s right here looking back at me,” Kittrell said. “I’ll never get married again. He was everything to me. He was everything.”

[Correction: A previous version of this story reported Dyrel Kittrell was killed in his own home, but he was not at his home when he was shot. The story has been corrected to accurately identify the correct location.]
