The NC Comedy Arts Festival, which features stand-up, sketch and improv performers from across North America, starts Wednesday in Chapel Hill.
The annual event was created in 2011 as a way to showcase Chicago-style improvisation to Carolina audiences and Southern improv performers.
It has really grown into a festival with a little something for anyone who wants to laugh.
The event kicks off Wednesday night with Emo Phillips at DSI Comedy Theater. Phillips's work has influenced Jim Carrey, Demetri Martin, Patton Oswalt and others.
A mix of stand-up, improv and sketch comedy shows continue on Thursday and run through Feb. 25 at Local 506, DSI Comedy Theater and The ArtsCenter
Shows to watch for:
- Home Pun Derby at DSI on Tuesday, Feb. 21 - A night of fast-paced wordplay with one winner being crowned the HomePun Champion.
- The Bat at The ArtsCenter on Saturday, Feb. 25 - Improv All-Stars assemble to close out the NC Comedy Arts Festival every year with an improv set performed completely in the dark.
- Improvised History on Saturday, Feb. 18 at The ArtsCenter - A historically funny, hysterically inaccurate show about what we remember from U.S. History.
