FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A woman died and a man was taken to Cape Fear Valley Hospital around 11:30 a.m. Thursday after a shooting in Fayetteville, according to police.

The shooting happened at 6539 Jeffrey Drive at the Summertime Apartments. Police said they do not believe a third party was involved, but they are not sure who fired the gun, which was found at the scene.

The man, whose name was not released, suffered life-threatening injuries, police said. He was listed in critical condition Thursday evening.

The woman was Stephanie Thompson, 24.

A neighbor said the two lived together but wasn't sure if they were married.

Nine months ago, a 21-year-old man was beaten to death in the same complex. Police arrested a drifter whom the victim had befriended.

"It's disturbing. It makes you think about moving," neighbor Dave Rupert said. " What the heck is going on that people have to kill each other around here?"
