DURHAM, N.C. — Authorities issued a Silver Alert Saturday afternoon for a missing Durham County woman who is believed to have a cognitive impairment.

Betty Lou Durham, 53, was last seen at 3903 Hanford Road.

She is believed to be driving a blue 2005 Nissan Altima, with state tag YPX9418. Her destination is unknown.

Durham is described as a white woman, 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing 140 pounds. She has blue eyes and shoulder-length blond hair.

Anyone with information about her whereabouts should call the Durham County Sheriff's Office at 919-560-0900.

Developed in 2007, Silver Alert is a system to quickly notify the public about missing endangered adults who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.

It also allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.
