Officers found Jibrael Menelik, of Apex, in the breezeway of a building at 700 Pony Club Circle, off Cary Glen Boulevard and Green Level Church Road, shortly after 2 a.m. He had been shot in the side and was conscious then, police said.
Menelik was transported to Duke University Hospital, where he died.
Neighbors who called 911 reported that they heard two men arguing, then a gunshot.
“One of the neighbors called and said they could hear somebody arguing and possibly a gunshot outside one of the apartments,” police Capt. Michael Williams said. "Then we received a phone call from somebody that had been inside the residence saying that they felt like somebody there had been shot."
Williams said Menelik's significant other lived in one of the apartments. Police have not yet released additional details about that relationship.
“We're working very aggressively to find a resolution to this terrible incident,” Williams said.
Anyone who was in the area at the time of the shooting should call Cary police at 919-469-4012 or Crime Stoppers at 919-266-2746. Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards for up $2,500 for information leading to charges in felony cases, and callers never have to identify themselves.
