Police search for drive-by shooting suspect

Durham police were searching for a 24-year-old man wanted in an August drive-by shooting that wounded another man.

DURHAM, N.C. — Durham police were searching for a 24-year-old man wanted in an August drive-by shooting that wounded another man.

Investigators said that Alton Dewayne "Popeye" Sanders, of Wabash Street, shot from one of two cars in an apartment complex at 1126 S. Hoover Road around midnight Aug. 4. Bullets struck a 22-year-man in the leg and buttocks.

Sanders, who remains on the loose, faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling and discharging a firearm within city limits.

Anyone with information on Sanders’ whereabouts was asked to call Investigator D.M. Anthony at 919-560-1020, ext. 226 or Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200. Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards for information leading to arrests in felony cases, and callers never have to identify themselves.

Equaan Straiter, 19, of Flatford Court, has also been charged in the shooting. He was arrested Aug. 28 and remained in the Durham County Jail Thursday.
