'This is their Super Bowl': 500 students take the stage for a 'very special' talent show

WRAL Fayetteville reporter Gilbert Baez has served as the event's master of ceremonies all 40 years!

Thursday's event began with performances on stage. After students with special needs performed in front of an audience, the participants were engaged with hands-on experiences.

For the large group of exceptional children within the Cumberland County district, the stage doesn't get any bigger or better than this.

"This is a good inclusive event for the kids," said Christa McLaurin, a parent. "It's kind of like their Super Bowl, you pulled out all the stops."

"It's really fun," said Christine Daniele, one student.

"Ultimately, it really does build their confidence and gives them the opportunity to show what they're doing in their classes and work with their teachers and just be able to come and work together," said Ayanna Richard, executive director for exceptional children's services at Cumberland County Schools.

Organizers hope to include middle and high school student performers at next year's event.
