Sports betting is now legal in North Carolina. Here’s how to enable responsible gaming features.

Effective Monday, sports fanatics across the state can now legally place bets through the following eight operators, all of which contain features that users can enable to help engage in responsible gaming.

On most sites, a user simply needs to go to their main account page and look for a tab labeled “Responsible Gaming.”

The feature allows a user to set limits for deposits, wages and time. Once a user hits their limits, they will be unable to place any more bets.

Sites like FanDuel and Fanatics also offer a “Reality Check” feature. When activated, it will track a user’s activity and alert them once they’ve been on the site for either 15 or 30 consecutive minutes.

The North Carolina State Lottery Commission also runs a voluntary self-exclusion program through the North Carolina Problem Gambling Program.

North Carolinians seeking support can fill out a form to voluntarily exclude themselves from sports wagering and pari-mutuel wagers for a certain time period. Licensed operators in the state will then freeze your existing account and prevent you from creating new accounts during that time period.

The NCPGP is funded solely by the North Carolina Education Lottery. To date, the program has received $3 million in total funds, $2 million of which was recently allocated under the new launch of sports betting.

The program offers services to help North Carolinians reduce gambling or quit problem gambling behaviors entirely.

According to the NCPGP, signs of problem gambling include:

  • Using sports betting to relieve stress or depressive feelings
  • Spending increasing amounts of time or money on gambling
  • Preoccupation and irritability when trying to cut back or not gambling
  • Placing bets on credit or with money allocated for other things
  • Chasing losses (gambling to earn back money that was lost gambling)
  • Lying or being secretive about gambling
  • Attempting to cut back without success
  • Only talking about wins, and never losses

Problem gambling support services are available statewide by dialing 1-800-GAMBLER.
