Man charged in Durham homicide on Liberty Street

Durham police found 53-year-old Derek Clay unconscious in the 900 block of Liberty Street.

DURHAM, N.C. — Police charged a man with murder after a Durham man died Tuesday afternoon in the 900 block of Liberty Street.

At approximately 3:14 p.m., officers responded to a report of an aggravated assault. Upon arrival, they found a man who was unconscious and not breathing. Police identified the man as 53-year-old Derek Clay.

Clay was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he was later pronounced dead.

Douglas Rashad Jones, 25, of Durham, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Jones in the Durham County Jail with no bond.

Investigation revealed that the man had been involved in a physical altercation with another person.

In addition, Durham Police are investigating the death of a person found outside a store just one block away from the Liberty Street scene.
