Durham police offering $10,000 hiring bonus to help attract new officers

Durham police are set to host a hiring event on Wednesday night to help fill about 20% of the officer positions that are vacant.

DURHAM, N.C. — The Durham Police Department is hosting a hiring event to help fill about 20% of the officer positions that are vacant.

The event starts at 6 p.m. ET Thursday at at 602 E. Main St. In-person attendees are asked to meet at 5:45 p.m. in the Durham police lobby.

People can register for the in-person event by emailing officer Ryan Harris at ryan.harris@durhamnc.gov. Those attending virtual must register online.

Thursday's event will discuss the many incentives offered and give attendees the opportunity to ask questions.

Incentives offered include:

  • Hiring bonus of $10,000
  • Paid training in their police academy
  • Up to $3,000 relocation incentive
  • City paid 401K and local government retirement plan
  • Employee assistance program
  • Take-home car program
  • Uniforms and equipment furnished
  • Annual boot and clothing allowance
  • Opportunities in 20+ specialized units
  • Education incentives, 2.5% to 5% (Associates to Bachelors)

Additional hiring events for the Durham Police Department are set for Aug. 3 and Aug. 17.
