RALEIGH, N.C. — A gas leak on Thursday blocked major thoroughfares in downtown Raleigh and forced the evacuation of five buildings in the area.

The Raleigh Fire Department said the gas leak was repaired by 10:20 a.m., and all five impacted buildings had reopened.

Street closures will remain in effect for between four to five hours while the road is repaired, according to firefighters, including Hargett Street between Salisbury and Fayetteville streets.

The Raleigh Police Department posted a map of the impacted area on Twitter.

People can use Wilmington Street as an alternate route.

Sky 5 flew over the scene at 10 a.m., where a bulldozer was being used to excavate part of the street.

There were multiple firefighters and ground crews responding to the scene.
