Taylor Swift, Dolly Parton featured in new NC Museum of History exhibit

RALEIGH, N.C. — The women of county music at the stars of a new exhibit at the North Carolina Museum of History.
"The Power of Women in Country Music" comes to Raleigh from the GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles.
The exhibit opens Friday and runs through Feb. 26, 2023. It highlights the contributions of artists including

Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, Rosanne Cash, Shania Twain, Reba McIntyre and Taylor Swift.

North Carolina artists Rhiannon Giddens, Rissi Palmer and Kasey Tyndall are also featured.

See clothing worn by the artists and some of their instruments on display on the third floor of the museum. A separate ticket is required for entry.

The museum gift shop is also a must-visit with its collection of country gifts, including posters and T-shirts featuring Swift, Parton and others.

Throughout its run, there will be a variety of concerts celebrating North Carolina artists. The Southern Songbirds Series will kick off on Saturday with North Carolina artists Charly Lowry, Caitlin Cary and H.C. McEntire.

  • Oct. 29: Opening Concert Kickoff - North Carolina artists Charly Lowry, Caitlin Cary, and H.C. McEntire
  • Dec. 10: Tift Merritt Sings the Women of Country Music
  • Dec. 11: Southern Songbirds: Alice Gerrard and Friends
  • Jan. 21: Southern Songbirds: An Evening with Rissi Palmer

Tickets are on sale now for the exhibit and the Southern Songbird shows.

On Saturday from noon to 4 p.m., the museum will host a Family Shindig celebrating this new exhibit. There will be local bluegrass bands, you can watch Jayne Henderson, a nationally known luthier, build a guitar or ukulele and try your hand at musical crafts. This free event does not include an exhibition ticket.
