FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville State University continues to increase economic development along the Murchison Road, which is the main street that cuts through its campus.

University leaders held a groundbreaking ceremony was held Thursday morning for a new Chick-fil-A and Starbucks. The establishments are set to open later this year.

In October 2021, the university purchased the shopping mall. Last month, the Fayetteville-Cumberland Regional Entrepreneur and Business HUB replaced the university bookstore.

Fayetteville State now owns the land from Filter Plant Drive to Coley Drive on Murchison Road. On Thursday morning, Chancellor Darrell Allison announced the name change for the plaza that is home to several Black-owned businesses.

"Our FSU Development Corporation Board recently voted to rename what has been historically ‘Bronco Square,’” Allison said. “Today, moving forward, this new area, this property, this ground will be forever, ‘Bronco Midtown.’"

Fayetteville Mayor Mitch Colvin said the city is considering changing the name of Filter Plant Drive to Bronco Way.
