Officers capture inmate who escaped Hillsborough prison

Officers on Tuesday morning captured an inmate who escaped the Orange County Correctional Center in Hillsborough late Monday night.

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — Officers on Tuesday morning captured an inmate who escaped the Orange County Correctional Center in Hillsborough late Monday night.

Tyrell K. Dickey was discovered missing shortly after 11 p.m. He was located in Rutherford County near Lake Lure around 6:45 a.m.

Dickey, 44, is described as a Black male who stands 5 feet 11 inches tall with a "stocky" build. He has a pierced left ear and tattoos on both his right and left arms.

Dickey was serving a seven-year sentence for felony breaking and entering and was scheduled to be released on Sept. 5, 2024. Officials said he will be taken to a higher custody level facility and will be charged with felony escape.

Investigators are working to learn how Dickey escaped.
