Attorney General Josh Stein is warning of a new scam where some people are trying to take advantage of a recent baby formula recall.

In the last month, contaminated lots of Similac, Elecare and Alimentum formula were recalled. The affected products can be returned for a refund or replacement.

However, the North Carolina Attorney General's Office has received reports of people showing up at homes and claiming to be from WIC, the popular supplemental nutrition program for low-income women, infants and children.

The scammers are offering to help make returns but pocket the refund money for themselves, Stein said.

People are asked to be aware of the scam. Officials said no one from the state or the WIC program is collecting formula cans door-to-door.
