We recently researched issues concerning child birth in North Carolina, going back to 2008. While doing so, we came across some facts worth sharing and pondering. From 2008 through 2017 there were 1,221,636 babies born in the state; 624,810 boys (51 percent) and 596,826 girls.

Here’s a snapshot:

-- Most births in a year: 130,758 (2008)

-- Fewest births in a year: 118,983 (2013)

-- Oldest mother: 58 years old (2017)

-- Oldest father: 81 years old (2015)

-- Day of the week most births occurred: Tuesday (2015, 2014, 2013, 2009 & 2008)

-- Youngest mother: 10 years old (2017, 2012)

-- Youngest father: 12 years old (2014)

-- Most births occurred on: Sept. 1 (2017, 2011 & 2009), Sept. 4 (2013), Sept. 8 (2016)

Ruby Love Shankwieler was born at 12:56 a.m. at UNC Rex Hospital weighing in at 5 pounds, 10 ounces.

-- Fewest births occurred on: Dec. 25 (in 2010, 2011, 2013 & 2016)

-- Largest live birth: 14 lbs, 3 oz. (2010)

-- Most sets of twins: 2,161 (2014 & 2009)

-- Most sets of triplets: 79 (2009)

-- Most quadruplets: 4 (2011)

-- Quintuplets: 1 (2016, 2012)

-- Most popular boys name: William

-- Most popular girls name: Emma
