FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. — A person riding a moped was seriously injured early Friday morning when an SUV crashed into him near Fuquay-Varina, officials said.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol troopers said an SUV was driving north on N.C. Highway 55 near Clayton Road early Friday morning southeast of Fuquay-Varina. Two people inside the SUV told troopers they saw a woman on the side of the road because she had some kind of light, so they slowed down, but they didn't see the moped driver, who had apparently stopped to talk to the other person.

The man who was hit was taken to the hospital with a head injury, troopers said.

The moped driver was not identified.
