RALEIGH, N.C. — A 21-year-old man was charged with murder after another man was shot and killed Thursday at a Raleigh apartment complex.

Raleigh police responded just before 4 p.m. on Thursday to a shooting in the 1800 block Cantwell Court near Raleigh Boulevard. Police on Friday said Floyd Lewright Smith Jr., 26, died in the shooting.

Derrick Lamont Jones was charged with murder and attempted first-degree murder in connection to the incident. He was taken to the Wake County Detention Center.

Another person was taken to WakeMed to be treated for multiple gunshot wounds, police said. The second person's name was not released.

Witnesses said there were two separate crime scenes.

The shooting occurred near Moesha Bland's backdoor.

"I was laying on the couch, and I heard some gunshots," she said.

Bland says after the shots, she went outside and saw a car crashing into a tree. She immediately went to the car to try to help the shooting victim.
"When I tried to grab him out the car, his body just locked up, and his head came up, and I saw the gunshot to the head and police started coming from everywhere," she said.
The other shooting scene happened about 50 yards away near David Wright's apartment.
"Basically he was down here on the ground, and he told somebody to call the cops," Wright said.
"The reason why I came out was because somebody drove by and told me to take the kids inside and somebody was shooting."
Police believe both shootings are connected but have not released a motive.
