18-year-old killed in Smithfield shooting

An 18-year-old Clayton man who had been injured in a drive-by earlier this year was killed in a shooting in Smithfield early Thursday, police said.

SMITHFIELD, N.C. — An 18-year-old Clayton man who had been injured in a drive-by earlier this year was killed in a shooting in Smithfield early Thursday, police said.

Lt. R.K. Powell said that officers responding to calls about gunshots around 12:40 a.m. found Rasheive DaShawn Ray lying in the front yard of 413 Collier St. Ray was pronounced dead of a gunshot wound at the scene.

No arrests have been made.

In March, Ray was injured when, he told police, a man in a passing car opened fire at him as he was walking in the 800 block of East Main Street in Clayton.
He was convicted as an accessory to a January 2009 shooting outside Clayton High School, in which no one was injured.
