As we forge ahead into the new year, it’s easy to focus on the challenges I face—tackling a very large, brand new project at work is the major one. But more importantly, I realize that my daughters have challenges as well, challenges that I need to be engaged in.

My older daughter is applying to the undergraduate business program at the college she attends. She is also seeking out summer educational programs where she can experience a new place and take classes that will apply to her major.

My younger daughter is tackling the rigors of junior year in high school along with the pressure of standardized testing, competitive dance, community service and a job. She is also looking for a summer study program and gearing up for another summer of lifeguarding. We are just beginning the college search which will intensify with the application process in the fall.

So, in many ways, while my obstacles may feel like the most important thing to me right now, I am well aware that my daughters are also scaling mountains, and while I don’t necessarily need to be on the mountain with them, I need to help them map out their climbs, and also be readily available for quick guidance and support along the way.

Sometimes, the responsibility of sending adults into the world in mine and my husband’s humble images seems daunting. Yet, I see their work ethic, and the fruits of their labor—good grades, well-rounded lives, and a hunger for what’s next. I know along the way they will scale many mountains, endure a few mudslides and arctic storms, and experience the incredible highs of hitting the summit and the beautiful, fleeting view you are rewarded with.

Here’s to tackling more mountains in 2020 … hoping you get to summit at least once!
