RALEIGH, N.C. — Thunder rolled and lightning cracked over Raleigh Tuesday afternoon as the daily dose of summer storms let loose, dumping heavy rains on parts of the Triangle and Sand Hills.

Southern Wake County, including areas of Garner and Fuquay-Varina, got pummeled with heavy rain, cloud-to-ground lightning and wind gusts around 4 p.m.

In Fayetteville, where storms were more concentrated, flash floods gushed down Ramsey Street before receding.

"These are what we call pulse-type storms. They ramp up very quickly and then die down just as quickly," said WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze.

On Wednesday, it will happen all over again.

"Rain and storms will play a more prominent role in our forecast as the week wears on," Maze said.
