Wednesday is Groundhog Day and that means some animals will be predicting the weather for us!

There are two notable events that happen locally every year on Groundhog Day. Raleigh remained virtual for its celebration this year due to COVID, but Garner held an in-person event.

Raleigh's Groundhog Day celebration

Sir Walter Wally saw his shadow, which means six more weeks of winter.

Wally is regularly featured on The Weather Channel's list of national Groundhog Day representatives and made his annual weather prognostication virtually via the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences' YouTube channel on Wednesday.

The announcement was preceded by a presentation about the history of Groundhog Day and facts about these amazing rodents.

"Our groundhog showed its shadow, which unfortunately means six more weeks of winter," announced Raleigh City Council member Nicole Stewart. "I'm going to hope that our groundhogs are wrong and that we get an early spring but for now, today's prediction is six more weeks of winter.

Garner's Groundhog Day celebration

In Garner, the Groundhog Day celebration returned to an in-person event at White Deer Park, 2400 Aversboro Road. The festivities included live animals, educational booths, Smokey Bear and storytime before Snerd the Groundhog delivered his prediction of six more weeks of winter.

Apex's Groundhog Day celebration

In Apex, it wasn't a groundhog making the prediction on the winter weather sticking around. Sylvia, the Apex Armadillo, also saw his shadow at the Apex Depot on Wednesday.
