Cleaning up after Hurricane Dorian

North Carolina will get $26 million to update roads and bridges, part of a total $1.39 billion award for such projects announced Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Federal Highway Administration.

“Emergency relief funding is critical to restoring vital transportation links damaged by severe weather and other unexpected events that are heavily relied upon by communities for daily travel,” said Deputy Federal Highway Administrator Stephanie Pollack.

In North Carolina, projects funded by the grant focus on repairing flood damage, including $12 million for damage from Hurricane Florence in 2018 and $7 million for work to restore damage done by Hurricane Dorian in 2019.

Emergency relief funds distributed to 42 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands will help pay for reconstruction and recovery from nearly 200 "emergency events," including hurricanes, floods and wildfires.
