RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina State University has selected 19 high school teachers from across the state for a Master Teaching Fellows program.

During their five years in the program, the 19 teachers from high-needs school systems "will deepen their understanding of the mathematics they teach and effective mathematics teaching practices, gain experience leading and mentoring students and educators, and share what they learn with other educators across their district, the state and nation," according to the university.

The partnership between N.C. State, The Innovation Project and the seven school districts where the teachers come from is supported by a five-year, $1.8 million grant from the National Science Foundation

“The goal of the program is to prepare high school mathematics teachers to be leaders and mentors in their schools and districts and within the state of North Carolina,” Karen Hollebrands, N.C. State professor and principal investigator on the project, said in a statement. “An additional goal of the project is to retain highly qualified experienced mathematics teachers.”

During the program, the teachers will:

  • Complete an online graduate certificate program in mathematics teaching and learning or a master’s program during the first year
