An 11-year-old child was airlifted to an area hospital after being struck by a vehicle Saturday afternoon in Wayne County.

GOLDSBORO, N.C. — An 11-year-old child was airlifted to an area hospital after being struck by a vehicle Saturday afternoon in Wayne County, county spokesman Joel Gillie said.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol was investigating the incident, which took place near the intersection of Old Grantham Road and Crestwood Drive in Goldsboro.

Details of the child's identity or condition were not immediately available.

Authorities have not yet said how the vehicle came to hit the child.
