Wrightsville Beach mulls beach smoking ban

Posted May 28, 2012

— Wrightsville Beach is considering the first ban on smoking at the beach in North Carolina.

The StarNews of Wilmington reports (http://bit.ly/JwPBpq ) that a resident-led petition to ban smoking at the beach was approved by the New Hanover County Board of Elections. That means Wrightsville Beach leaders can either approve the ban or put it up for a vote by the whole town.

The Board of Alderman voted down a similar ban in March, prompting the petition drive. The ordinance would ban smoking in the sand, but not in the entire town.

Steve Mann was smoking a cigarette on Wrightsville Beach on Sunday and said he would consider going somewhere else. But others say the ban could help keep the beaches clean and safe,

What is so hard about facing the fact that your rights end where other peoples’ begin?

Pretend for a second that I walk the streets and beaches throwing Asbestos fibers into the air. I like the way they smell and want them around me.

Should I be able to toss this Class A Carcinogen around other people and children? How about when we’re all in an elevator? If not, how is this different from cigarette smoke (that is in the same carcinogen class)?

@ncouterbanks69 said, "this will never pass..Just shows how dumb some people can be I guess."

You told us that you're a smoker. ...someone who voluntarily inhales a Class A Carcinogen. (like Asbestos, Radon, Benzene, etc.) ...and you're calling *other* people dumb?

@rocket said, "Let's just ban freedom while we are at it."

On May 8th, you did just that. And, you didn't just BAN gay marriage, since it was already against the law....you created the Biggest Government that you could. You created a Constitutional Amendment banning the marriage two consenting adults.

But it's the restriction of smoking cigarettes (a Class A cancer causing agent) that NOW has you griping about "freedom"? Wow.

I think SOME smokers are inconsiderate. Not all. Not every smoker on the beach, tosses their cigarettes on the beach. Not every smoker that smokes outside an establishment, smokes RIGHT AT the front door. I have, however, encountered those very few individuals who smoke, literally, right AT the front door. That is rude. I know that most of them don't mean to, and they probably just aren't thiking, but after they see me coming and see what I'm doing, as I walk up to the door, they ALWAYS very quickly, apologize. LOL!!!!!!!!!! It's called common courtesy and decency. Something we all should have. I know I do!

Good story you made up dirkdiggler. How many times has that happened to you..probably none. I guess you go to a beach where the wind doesn't blow. People probaby get sick of hearing your toddler crying and whining like you do. Not all smokers throw their cigarettes in the sand. I do notice that lots of men spit. Do you spit on the sand at the beach? That is one of the most disgusting things in the world. This is the free country...move to a country to controls its people.

Just FYI folks...I don't smoke but I know that those of you that want to ban smoking have your own disgusting habits that others have to put up with like your being in someone's business. Get a life and stay out of other people's affairs.

Forget smoking. Lets ban everything that somebody does not like. I for one can't stand doritos. Just the smell of it makes me want to gag. So that needs to stay off the beach as well. Lets ban fat people. Who like likes to see ten tons of fat in a g-string? Ban surfing. Surfing is dangerous and someone could get killed by a surfer running into child. Lets ban everyone on the beach except me because I could just easily trip over somebody when I am not watching my step and could break my neck. Ban peeing in the water. Ever wonder why the ocean is so salty? No umbrellas either. I had one come at me like a guided missile when the wind caught it. What else could we ban?

That is because smokers throw their stubs etc. on the grounds and not in the proper place of disposal.

Ah, there's nothing more pleasant than setting up stuff in the sand for a day of relaxation, only to have a chain smoker set up 10 feet away, stinking up the air, sending me home with the smell of smoke all over my clothes, towels, and what have you. It's even better when they toss a lit cigarette and it lands on my beach blanket, burning a hole in it not three inches from my toddler who just about picks it up as I scramble to get to it before she does.

Smokers are awesome! Thanks for all you do!

"Do we really want a society where if you don't like my activities then YOU have to get up and move."

No, we want a society where we create a new law every time some whiner doesn't get his way.
