— Two separate wrecks made the morning commute difficult for drivers on Interstate 40 and U.S. Highway 70 Tuesday.

Two eastbound lanes of U.S. 70 East remain closed after a wreck involving a dump truck there around 8:30 a.m.

As well, traffic got backed up for miles on both sides of I-40 after a wreck on the westbound side near Exit 285 to Aviation Parkway near Cary shortly before 7:30 a.m.

Three westbound lanes were closed during the height of the morning rush hour, and transportation officials urged drivers to take a detour along N.C. Highway 54.

At one point, westbound traffic delays extended back to nearly the interchange with U.S. Highway 401 in downtown, on Wade Avenue to the junction with Interstate 440, and on I-440 West past Glenwood Avenue. Onlooker delays backed up traffic on I-40 East past the junction with Interstate 540.

WOW I feel for those who have to commute back and forth to work every day on these roads, including my son...

what about the people who follow TOO CLOSE??
I see it every day..on all the roads.
or people who change lanes when there is no room for them in the other lane..does anyone wonder if the car they're pulling in front of can stop if they have too?
what about anticipating what might happen down the road?
I'll stop now..there are lots more dumb things that drivers do..that they shouldn't

I would like to let everybody know that the driver in the wreck was not texting on on the cell. Yes they are from NC & us people from NC know how to drive yes as good as everybody else/

ignorant people are all over the world. Its not yankees, new yorkers, or NC natives. All of those groups have good drivers and bad. It had more to do with educating people. Some states like New Jersey and California have installed lighweight plastic "fences" on top of the cement barrier for a) discourages people from crossing the highway on foot, b) keeps rubber neckers from slowing down and looking at some poor person who got involved in a wreck.

This morning I was going a corner on a back road that had a double yellow for miles. Heading towards me was a truck with a landscaping trailer. That person thought it was to wander into my lane instead of staying in his. After that I came around corner and saw a guy slow from 55 to 35, no turn signal, just down shifted. Do I think NC is bad? No, because everyday is not like this. Yes I am from Rhode Island, been here since 1998 and I love the place.

The combination of "NC native slow, left-lane driving onlookers" and "I'm more important than you get out of my way yankee" drivers yet again proved to cause a lot of aggrevation.

Why do people take such offense when someone says NC drivers are the worst? They aren't saying that only native born NC drivers are the worst, but all NC drivers. They come from all over and it's true that NC has the worst drivers of any state I have driven in.

Interesting how many people have opinions about what and who caused these accidents, although I don't believe that information has been released. Let's see, it's either those "darn Yankees" (really, is this the 1800's still?!), bad NC drivers, or people from Cary. Really?!! Geez. What I would like to see is genuine concern for those who were involved in the accidents. I, for one, was very aggravated as I sat in traffic on the beltline/Wade Ave extension forever after having had way too much coffee, ahem!, but I'm glad it wasn't me that was IN the accident. Hope everyone is OK,and the drive home is WAY quicker!

"On the other hand, when I’m in the left lane, driving 10-12 MPH OVER the posted speed limit, I just don’t have the urge to move over to let someone pass that REALLY wants to break the Law...." -SailbadTheSinner

That same logic is why there are some many accidents. Don't stay in the left lane with the right lane is empty. Move your tail!
