CARY, N.C. — Two separate wrecks made the morning commute difficult for drivers on Interstate 40 and U.S. Highway 70 Tuesday.

Two eastbound lanes of U.S. 70 East remain closed after a wreck involving a dump truck there around 8:30 a.m.

As well, traffic got backed up for miles on both sides of I-40 after a wreck on the westbound side near Exit 285 to Aviation Parkway near Cary shortly before 7:30 a.m.

Three westbound lanes were closed during the height of the morning rush hour, and transportation officials urged drivers to take a detour along N.C. Highway 54.

At one point, westbound traffic delays extended back to nearly the interchange with U.S. Highway 401 in downtown, on Wade Avenue to the junction with Interstate 440, and on I-440 West past Glenwood Avenue. Onlooker delays backed up traffic on I-40 East past the junction with Interstate 540.
