Woman dies in wreck with Cumberland sheriff's deputy
Investigators said a woman who died in a wreck with a Cumberland County sheriff's deputy late Monday intentionally hit the cruiser.
Posted — UpdatedThe incident began about 10:30 p.m. when a deputy went to a home in the 2400 block of Gray Goose Loop in Faytteville. The sheriff's office said a man at the home reported that his girlfriend tried to kill herself.
Deputy Jonathan Perkins arrived to find 42-year-old Rebecca Holmes, of Emerline Avenue in Fayetteville, getting into her vehicle and backing out of the driveway. Investigators said she crashed into the driver's side door of Perkins' cruiser, a Ford Crown Victoria.
Perkins, who was not hurt in the crash, said Holmes did not stop.
Cumberland sheriff's Lt. Shawna Leake headed toward the location to help when she encountered Holmes as the two entered a sharp curve on Camden Road, near Crystal Springs Road, between Fayettteville and Hope Mills.
"Holmes drove her vehicle into the direct path of Lt. Leake's cruiser," sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Tanna said.
Holmes died at the scene.
Leake suffered a broken ankle and was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment. The spokeswoman said Leake is on medical leave.
"It could have been a lot worse that it was, although it was a bad situation because one person's life was lost," Tanna said.
The crash is under investigation by the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
