BENSON, N.C. — A woman died early Friday after a car crashed in southern Johnston County east of Benson, troopers said.

A white 2005 Saturn minivan was northbound on Meadowbrook Road when it crossed the center line and ran off the road to the left in a sharp curve near West Johnson Road, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. The minivan traveled across a yard and hit an oak tree.

Shena Stone, 33, a passenger in the minivan, died at the scene.

The driver, Darnell Reynolds, 32, was taken to WakeMed in Raleigh. His condition was unknown.

Alcohol was a factor in the crash, and charges are pending, authorities said.

Troopers said it was unclear when the crash happened, but it was reported around 5:30 a.m.

The homeowners said they heard what they thought was thunder around midnight but did not know that someone had crashed into their front yard. They woke up to flashing lights on their property.

Although Stone and Reynolds had Wilson addresses, authorities said they believe both were homeless and living out of the minivan.
